Student Life hosts campus-wide birthday party
Who says birthday parties are just for kids? Southwestern Seminary’s Student Life team hosted a birthday bash and “old-school” game night, Feb. 5, reminiscent of students’ favorite childhood celebrations, complete with classic games and four different cakes decorated according to such themes as Batman and Minnie Mouse. Serving as one giant birthday celebration for everyone on campus, the night even saw attendees join in singing the traditional “Happy Birthday” song.
One of Student Life’s monthly Café Nights, the “game night” portion of the evening allowed students to take a break from studying and engage in friendly competition through popular games like Candy Land, Chutes and Ladders, and Battleship. Future Café Nights include two “open mic” nights (on March 4 and April 1).
“Any event that offers free cake, free coffee and a chance to play Candy Land again is sure to draw a crowd,” says Student Life staff member Daniel Nease. “The events are come and go, they are on campus, they provide free entertainment in the company of good friends, and they involve coffee.”
Since the Café Nights began last semester, more and more professors have been joining in on the fun. Nease says this is an important part of campus life and that students value the time to talk with their professors in a fun setting such as game night.
“I believe that faculty jumping onboard and being a part of some of these nights has only helped elevate the events,” Nease says. “Students have loved the chance to interact with their professors and other faculty in an environment other than the classroom.”
In the next Café Night, March 4, students can show off their creative talents through song, poetry, or any other hidden skills. In an open mic night last fall, participants performed original spoken-word pieces and covers of their favorite songs. To participate, students can reserve their performance spots by emailing studentlife@swbts.edu .
“In the upcoming open mic night, students will have the opportunity to express the gifts and talents that God has blessed them with,” says Bachelor of Science student Zer Surigao. “To the people who hesitate to sign up because they feel scared or nervous, don’t be. Open mic night is a great opportunity and the perfect place for you because it is full of people who want to see you express your gifts and want to be blessed through your talents.”
