Student’s devotion to evangelism continues into summer months

From the moment of his salvation, Master of Divinity student Ho Jin Lee was eager to share the Gospel with as many people as he could. No matter the circumstances, his burden for the lost, he says, motivated him to evangelize those in his day-to-day routine as well as to set aside time for door-to-door evangelism.

Fifteen years later, this still holds true for Lee. After starting classes at Southwestern, Lee joined the Second Mile evangelism efforts as often as possible, and even during months when teams do not officially meet, he committed to going out every Friday into the neighborhoods surrounding the Southwestern campus. Rain or shine, holiday or semester, alone or with a group, Lee consistently engages in door-to-door evangelism.

“Evangelism isn’t just something we do while we are in school here at Southwestern,” Lee says. “This is what we should be doing with our lives.”

In the four weeks following the end of the spring 2016 semester, Lee shared the Gospel with 12 different people in the neighborhoods around Southwestern’s campus, and he saw seven of them give their lives to Christ. Among these people were a man who has lived in the area for more than 20 years, a young mother of an 18-month-old boy, and a 16-year-old high school student on summer break from school. 

Although he is often met with indifference, confusion or even hostility, Lee says many people are interested in the message of the Gospel and demonstrate a deep spiritual hunger as well as an eagerness to learn more. A common story from many residents is a history of living in a religious home and attending church semi-regularly yet never hearing or fully comprehending the Gospel. 

No longer are these seven people walking in such darkness, Lee says. Through his obedience to go out and evangelize, these people heard the Good News and responded.

Reflecting on the experiences of these four weeks, Lee says he hopes to encourage students to never stop witnessing. “People are dying every day,” he says. “I try to challenge people to come out and do evangelism as well—it is what we are called to do. We are servants of God and should not hesitate to go out and share the Gospel.”
